Ruth Asawa (1926?2013), widely known for her looped-wire sculptures, was an inveterate drawer. She filled sketchbook after sketchbook and even stated that drawing was central to her sculpture. This volume is the first to consider the significance of drawing in Asawa?s oeuvre throughout her career, featuring essays that examine the range of Asawa?s aesthetic maneuvers across materials and techniques; how Asawa?s drawing intertwined with the Bay Area arts community and her contributions to public education as a teacher and organizer; and the influence of Josef Albers?s pedagogy and Asawa?s lifelong adoption of his type of paper folding. Tracing Asawa?s artistic journey from her first formal art lessons in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II through her time at Black Mountain College and beyond, this comprehensive overview of the artist?s drawings includes reproductions of more than one hundred works? many of which have never been published? organized into eight thematic sections that cut through time, reflecting an art-making practice that was more circular or cyclical than linear.Bron : https://www.copyrightbookshop.be/shop/ruth-asawa-through-line/

"Touch Response is about lacking language and how to (not) interpret images. This is a book on vulnerability, as a description, prescription or side effect. It is made in a difficult period of fatigue and pain, mainly in the sofa in my living room, as a dialogue with myself and other invisible forces."

"This exhibition catalogue documents almost one hundred figurative works on paper by Ellsworth Kelly (American, 1923-2015) and shows a new side of an artist best known for abstraction. These informal depictions of friends and other ad hoc models as well as expressive self-portraits-all rarely or never previously displayed or published-span the entirety of Kelly's career, from the mid-1940s to the early 2000s. Throughout his life, such drawings provided a place to test his ideas, refine his bold use of lines, and interrogate the space between naturalism and abstraction. These works also capture his social milieu, which intersected with other creative circles and the queer community. Bolstered by support from the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation and the participation of the artist's husband, Jack Shear, the publication finally situates an important aspect of the artist's work within his full oeuvre"--

Armed with pencil, eraser and breaker knife, Fabrice Souvereyns (°1995 Tongeren) creates a detailed world from intense observations and perceptions. Souvereyns’s young oeuvre draws inspiration from the physical world, from fauna and flora and from what is visible to humankind in the skies. In addition, more ‘invisible’ themes also play a substantial role in the work. The influence of, for example, science cannot be denied, while art history also serves as inspiration for the artist’s eccentric plant world. Vegetal scenes in art reflect how humans relate to subjects such as nature, religion, philosophy or science at the time. Souvereyns makes use of this frame of reference but also leaves room for his personal formal language. As a result, a certain universality and restraint always hangs around his drawings: although they are based on centuries-old natural landscapes, we cannot exactly find them in reality. The line between reality and the (sub)consciousness blurs. While working, he is guided by spontaneity yet the drawings are not simply the result of automatism. Each movement, whether adding or omitting, leaves a unique trace, and is a deliberate choice by the artist.

What precedes architecture? Architect and artist Malgorzata Maria Olchowska (° Bartoszyce, 1982) explores how personal and collective memories influence our view of the built environment. The book is built around a text by Vlad Ionescu (Faculty of Architecture and Art, PXL/UHasselt) in which he reflects on the work of Malgorzata Maria Olchowska, from 2009 to today. This is supplemented and illustrated by means of a visual essay in which Olchowska shows her work of the last five years. The design of the book is done by Ward Heirwegh. "There is the house we design as an adult, the one we drew as a child, the property of the vir probatus, the house that provides safety and the one that frightens the child. Olchowska's prints work with these imaginary alterations as façades or as side and interior views: they are the waiting rooms of architecture." Vlad Ionescu. Exhibition: Red Star Line Museum, Antwerp, Belgium (31.03. - 23.04.2023).

The practice of Antwerp-based artist Dennis Tyfus (b. 1979) encompasses a wide range of artistic media, including drawings, sculptures, installations, videos, magazines, books, music, vinyl records, tattoos, his own radio show, concerts and performances. In his oeuvre, everything flows into everything else, without a fixed definition, beginning or end. In doing so, he draws heavily on the work of artists such as Dieter Roth, Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw and Wim T. Schippers. By combining elements from his personal psyche with various aspects of high and low culture and approaching them on an equal footing, Tyfus creates a universe in which the personal, the everyday and the uncanny come together. This book brings together a wide selection from his oeuvre.
